Our client is a sourcing office of an American Consumer goods company, with more than 45-year history selling its products in more than 50 countries. The business operates in two divisions, one as the sourcing arm of its mother company, one as a trading company serving third party customers.

Most of the existing business of its trading business is working with the US customers. The company is seeking an International Sales Director to spearhead their business development efforts outside the United States.

Scope and Responsibilities

This is a newly created role to effectively build and manage the company's OEM/ODM capabilities in China and expand the already established US network more broadly in the UK and Europe. The role will report to the GM China and lead a team of 8 in sales and PD/Sourcing. He/She will collaborate with the leadership teams in the USA and Europe to shape and deliver the company's vision and mission. Immediate focus will be on developing and implementing strategic plans, monitoring growth, developing relevant and related networks internally and externally aiming to accelerate growth, according to company goals and objectives.

The International Business Development Director is a high-impact role and prominently visible across the entire company. Additionally, the position assures product conformance to customers' established requirements and standards through appropriate validation activities. The International Business Development Director will need to have a strategic mindset, but also drive at an operational level of expertise, required to manage the current client base, and develop new clients.

The company is seeking candidates who possess strong sales capabilities, well developed business acumen, effective people management skills, customer alignment, and a hands-on management style which delivers results.

This highly collaborative role requires the incumbent to work effectively with peers, while applying effective motivation in delivering new business to achieve profitable and efficient sales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement commercial strategies for the sales channel, according to company goals and objectives aiming to accelerate growth.
  • Conduct market research and analysis to create detailed business plans on commercial opportunities, including expansion and business development.
  • Understand the requirements of existing customers to ensure their needs are met and for new customers, establishing needs and requirements.
  • Act to acquire new customers and manage client relationships effectively, with a focus on quality (new & existing).
  • Add value to growth activities through the identification of new commercial opportunities and manage marketing efforts.
  • Focus on promotion and expansion of the company's commercial activities which will generate revenues and sustainable growth. Build collaborative networks with the USA & European teams to maximize business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with and coordinate diverse teams in China, USA, and Europe.
  • Build and maintain profitable partnerships with key stakeholders.
  • Monitor performance and establish accountability of commercial activities using key metrics and performance related reports establishing accountability with senior executives.
  • Proactively set financial targets, budget development, and monitor targets and goals.

Key Selection Criteria and Personal Attributes

  • An experienced International Sales Director in the consumer goods industry, with 15 years' experience in selling consumable products.
  • Demonstrated skills in understanding the market, keeping abreast of trends and market conditions to provide advice to the China General Manager and leadership teams in the USA and Europe.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset in creating creative strategies and organizational capabilities to deliver comprehensive growth programs.
  • Strong financial acumen with a strong understanding of P&L and ROI and demonstrated results driving significant, consistent YOY sales growth.
  • Proven experience in sales and marketing and managing relationships with key clients.
  • Clear understanding of market research methods and analysis.
  • Solid knowledge of performance reporting and financial budgeting processes.
  • Strong commercial mindset and an understanding of trends and market shifts.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to lead through influence and engagement.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic, growth-based culture with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
  • Comfortable with change, demonstrating adaptability and organizational savvy in finding solutions and driving projects.
  • Proven track record working with a high degree of autonomy, managing change effectively and efficiently.
  • Relevant or related degree in business administration, finance. or relevant fields. An MBA or master's degree preferred.
  • Fluent English and Mandarin.
