M+ Conservation is dedicated to the study and preservation of contemporary artworks representing visual culture in Hong Kong, Asia, and beyond. Our departmental practices are devoted to the thorough care and presentation of artworks, merging the study of material histories with a comprehensive approach to contemporary art conservation. Reporting to the Senior Conservator of Collections, you will be a core conservation team member encompassing various disciplines including painting, paper, photography, time-based media, preventive conservation, and science. As the Objects Conservator you will play a pivotal role in conserving a broad array of contemporary artworks, with a particular emphasis on three-dimensional objects including architectural models and design works, complex installations, and kinetic objects. In your day-to-day work you will be expected to incorporate this collection care into evolving theories in art conservation, ensuring our approach remains at the forefront of the field and respects the integrity of each work.

While working in close collaboration with the Conservation team and/ or other relevant stakeholders, the primary responsibilities of the successful candidate will be as described below:

  • conduct detailed assessments and create condition reports, treatment plans, and pre-acquisition evaluations for a wide variety of contemporary artworks

  • carry out conservation treatments across a spectrum of contemporary art, design, and architecture;

  • advise on best practices for care, storage, maintenance, handling, mounting, packing and shipping, and display of artworks;

  • engage in research on the materials and techniques of artists represented in the collection; investigate degradation processes, treatment options and efficacy of treatments through evidence-based studies; disseminate research results through publications or presentations at professional gatherings;

  • collaborate closely with living artists and/or relevant stakeholders to understand their techniques and intentions, ensuring conservation decisions respect ethical considerations and the artist's conceptual framework;

  • provide guidance on conservation for incoming and outgoing loans and exhibitions, including planning, troubleshooting, and the preparation of artworks for transport and display. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies and generate conservation documentation for all movements and displays;

  • coordinate and liaise on complex conservation projects with a team of conservators, technicians, curators, art handlers, and registrars;

  • Train and supervise conservation technicians, volunteers and interns as required.

You should:

  • possess a Master’s degree in objects, sculpture, or contemporary art conservation from a recognized conservation training program;

  • have a minimum of 7 years of practical postgraduate experience in conserving three-dimensional contemporary artworks, with a preference for candidates with institutional or museum experience; Those with less experience may be considered for an associate level position.

  • demonstrate expertise in treating and documenting a wide range of contemporary materials and artworks, including oversized sculptures, kinetic artworks, design objects and installation arts;

  • have experience of coordinating complex time-sensitive conservation projects, particularly those involving temporary exhibitions;

  • be able to provide specialist advice for storage, transportation and installation of works for display. Experience in preventive conservation practices is desirable;

  • have a deep interest and knowledge in modern and contemporary art, architecture and design, including materials and techniques, and demonstrate expertise in diverse conservation techniques and theories;

  • be an innovative and enthusiastic team player with strong critical thinking and problem solving skills;

  • be able to work in a fast paced and continuously challenging environment; and

  • have strong oral, written and interpersonal communication skills in English. Knowledge of Chinese is advantageous but not required.
