Research Facility Scientific Officer

The selected candidate will provide essential technical assistance in the operation of the animal research facility, ensuring the effective use and maintenance of research equipment, as well as the safe conduct of laboratory activities. Key responsibilities include:
- Offering technical support for the daily operations of the animal care facility;
- Delivering training in animal handling and surgical procedures, primarily focusing on rodents and rabbits, along with monitoring surgical outcomes;
- Facilitating training on various research instruments, including dissection microscopes, fluorescent microscopes, imaging devices, micro-injectors, anesthesia systems, and euthanasia systems, while managing a preventive maintenance program for these tools to ensure optimal performance;
- Overseeing all sanctioned animal research within the facility to uphold high standards of animal welfare, care, and ethical practices;
- Conducting safety training related to animal experiments, particularly concerning the use of chemicals and drugs, and performing safety inspections to enforce compliance with chemical and drug safety regulations;
- Assisting in the administration of the occupational safety program within the facility;
- Preparing documentation necessary for AAALAC accreditation;
- Executing any additional responsibilities as assigned by the Director or their delegate.
The role may require shift work, including weekends and public holidays.
Qualifications
Candidates should possess a PhD in Biological Sciences or a related field, along with a minimum of five years of experience in animal research utilizing mouse disease models. A solid understanding of international animal care standards, post-surgical care, animal ethics, various surgical techniques, and the safe use of chemicals in animal research is essential. Familiarity with the AAALAC accreditation process is considered advantageous.
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to participate in a written assessment.
Compensation and Benefits
The remuneration package will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. The appointment will be on a fixed-term contract, with fringe benefits including gratuity, leave, and medical and dental coverage.
