The Opportunity

We are seeking a senior energy, natural resources, and infrastructure lawyer to join our award-winning Energy team. This position could be based in our Beijing or Hong Kong office. The team is busy, successful, and growing, offering excellent career progression opportunities for the successful candidate.

You will work closely with industry-leading Energy partners, Calvin Ho, Hilary Lau, and Monica Sun, as well as other corporate energy, projects, and infrastructure specialists across Asia and the wider Herbert Smith Freehills network.

  • Work with clients from various jurisdictions, focusing on energy, natural resources, and infrastructure transactional matters in Asia, covering power (including renewables), LNG, oil and gas, mining, utilities (such as water and waste), and other critical infrastructure.
  • The role would be suited to a predominantly corporate transactional lawyer with experience in M&A, joint ventures, commercial contracts (including supply, offtake, and trading), and regulation in energy and infrastructure.
  • Project development experience is also desirable. However, the team works closely with dedicated construction, procurement, and finance specialists, so these skills are not a prerequisite.
  • Work closely with the team in Greater China, regionally, and across the broader network.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level associates in the team and assist with providing training and the development of know-how.
  • Participate in business development alongside the senior team in the region focused on energy, mining, and infrastructure.
  • Have at least 5 years' post-qualification experience in the energy, natural resources, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Demonstrate excellent drafting, analytical, and deal project management skills.
  • Be a confident, driven, and collaborative individual.
  • Have experience working as the lead associate on M&A, joint ventures, commercial contracts, and regulation in energy and infrastructure.
  • Have a strong academic record.
  • Be enthusiastic, adaptable, and industrious, with excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills.
  • Work effectively within tight timeframes, both collaboratively and autonomously.
  • Work well with people, including more junior team members who will depend on you for guidance.
  • Have excellent English and Chinese language skills (fluent written and spoken English and Chinese are required).
