Product Development Specialist

Product development for the Asia market is coordinated from Hong Kong office. From this office, a wide range of products is sourced, spanning from furniture to home decoration, garden products to fitness items. For this role the focus is on sourcing from Chinese factories. Therefore, a close cooperation will be required with the local sourcing team in Ningbo, either by mail/phone calls, or by traveling there. All products are developed with e-commerce in mind, meaning that items should have a competitive price point and efficient packaging. Key Responsibilities This role will act as a bridge between the Product Development Director (PDD, based in Hong Kong) and the sourcing team in China. After the PDD has initiated a sourcing project, the day‑to‑day communication with the local sourcing team in Ningbo needs to be handled. Together with the local sourcer, the right sourcing decisions should be made in order to choose the most suitable supplier and ultimately develop new products with a competitive price point. Specifically this means: Assist the PDD in doing market research to determine the best‑selling product specifications, either by doing online research or by visiting trade fairs. Ensure the local sourcing team understands the sourcing plan and set up a clear list of product specifications. Collect and analyze quotations from the sourcing team, identify the most suitable suppliers. Occasionally visit suppliers. Follow up on price negotiations until contract is signed. Candidate requirements Languages: Fluent English and Mandarin is a must, since communication with sourcers in the Ningbo office will be required. Experience level: 3‑5 years’ experience in sourcing/product development, preferably in hardlines (non‑food, non‑textile consumer products), either in a sourcing or buyer role. Familiar with Microsoft Excel, especially VLOOKUP and PivotTable functionality. Knows how to source and select the right suppliers. Good sense of European / US market trends and designs. Good commercial feeling: understanding which items will sell well at which price level. Ideal candidate backgrounds Hardline sourcing department of supermarkets such as LIDL, Aldi, Carrefour, Kingfisher Group, Walmart, Target, Cosco, etc. Sourcing or trading companies that help buyers find suppliers in China/Asia. Ecommerce companies sourcing in China and selling in Europe or the USA. Willingness to travel to Mainland China, especially to the sourcing office in Ningbo.
