Position Overview

The Product Development Manager is responsible for leading and refining the product development process at Chef Works, ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals and financial targets. This role involves overseeing the Product Development, Pattern Making, and Sample Sewing departments while maintaining strong collaboration with cross-functional teams such as Merchandising, Design, Sourcing, Global Buying/Production, and Quality Assurance. The position requires a deep understanding of the apparel industry, managing complex business processes, and applying advanced analytical skills to drive product commercialization.

As the leader of product development efforts, the manager will work closely with the Senior Director of Product to plan, execute, and fine-tune long-term product strategies, focusing on optimizing efficiency, quality, and innovation in product creation.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Directly lead and manage cross-functional teams across Product Development, Pattern Making, and Sample Sewing.
  • Provide leadership oversight for the Sourcing, Development, and Production coordinator based in the Hong Kong office.
  • Manage and drive milestone adherence to the Go-To-Market (GTM) process, ensuring all deliverables are met on time and in alignment with business goals.
  • Collaborate with leadership across various departments (Design, Merchandising, Sourcing, Production, QA) to resolve complex challenges and optimize cross-functional collaboration.
  • Inspire and develop a high-performing product development team, fostering an environment of creativity, efficiency, and innovation.

Product Development & Commercialization:

  • Lead the execution of sourcing strategies for fabrics, trims, construction technologies, and vendor selection to meet the company’s vision and product requirements.
  • Oversee the commercialization process for pattern making and sewing, ensuring timely delivery of high-quality products in accordance with the Chef Works GTM calendar.
  • Partner with Design, Merchandising, Sourcing, Production, and QA teams to ensure the commercial viability of product designs, coordinating new and redevelopment projects within established KPIs and timelines.
  • Manage the development and optimization of product processes with manufacturing partners, utilizing internal and external resources to ensure efficiency and quality.

Continuous Improvement & Cost Optimization:

  • Recommend improvements in garment construction, fabric selection, or finishes to reduce costs while maintaining quality standards.
  • Lead efforts to optimize the PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) system and tech packs, ensuring streamlined product creation and development processes across departments.
  • Collaborate with the sourcing and production teams to ensure accurate and efficient product data management and ensure compliance with Chef Works’ product standards.

Requirements

Education & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (such as Fashion Merchandising, Apparel Design, or Textile Engineering) or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in product creation and commercialization within the apparel industry.
  • 3+ years of management experience, preferably in a high-growth apparel business, with a focus on cross-functional team leadership and strategy development.
  • Proven track record of successfully leading the commercialization process for apparel products, from concept to final production.
  • Expertise in garment construction, sustainability practices, and manufacturing processes.
  • Experience in overseas factory operations, with a strong understanding of international business and cultural dynamics.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and improving complex supply chain and production workflows.

Technical Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong technical knowledge of raw materials, garment manufacturing, and garment cost structure.
  • In-depth understanding of fit, design modifications, and their impact on cost.
  • Proficiency with PLM systems is a plus; ability to learn and adapt to new tools and platforms.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook), with strong analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of industry trends, sustainability practices, and emerging technologies in apparel production.

Physical Requirements

  • Occasional lifting of up to 20-30 lbs. (less than 5% of the time).
  • Ability to perform desk work, including extended periods of computer use and videoconferencing.
  • Must be able to handle fabrics and garments for testing and quality checks.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, and color vision.
