You will manage developing, supporting, and improving a point‑of‑sales system and underwriting rules engine while driving automation initiatives through advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). Your ability will help streamline underwriting processes, enhance decision accuracy, and support our strategic digital transformation efforts. Additionally, you will be driving internal underwriting reviews and be the point person for market benchmarking to ensure industry‑leading standards. The job title may be changed to Head of Strategic Underwriting for those with more extensive experience. Responsibilities Develop, implement, and enhance existing underwriting rules to support increased straight‑through processing. Collaborate with underwriting, data science, and IT teams to design automated solutions that improve workflow and decision‑making. Find opportunities for automation and AI integration within underwriting operations. Develop and deploy AI and ML models to support predictive analytics, risk scoring, and decision automation. Benchmark underwriting practices against local competitors to ensure industry‑leading standards. Provide education and training to internal stakeholders on new automation tools, AI applications, and best practices. Monitor and improve the performance of automated underwriting solutions. Stay current with industry best practices, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes relevant to underwriting automation and AI. Work with underwriting operations to ensure proper understanding of underwriting strategies and execution guidelines. Oversee the compilation and delivery of Underwriting Conducting underwriting (medical, non‑medical) to enhance practices, approach and guidelines Provide input to product development to ensure existing issues or potential issues affecting automation efficiency are addressed. Benchmarking AXA Underwriting in comparison to the industry. Qualifications University Graduate – in business, insurance, legal, medical or accounting. Completion or working towards Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI), Fellow, Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU) or ANZIFF qualifications. Underwriting and/or Claims experience of at least 7 years. Proven experience with underwriting rules engines and automation tools. Experience with AI/ML is a plus. Understanding of medical terminology; use of reinsurance manuals and medical references, and the impact of the medical risk on distinct types of cover. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills: data analysis, decision‑making. Strong people skills: ability to influence others, communicate goals and strategies effectively, prove flexibility and active listening. Initiative‑taking, enthusiastic and outcome‑focused. Detailed knowledge of product, including definitions, features and benefits. Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation and codes of practice.
