Platform Delivery Middleware Services Engineer

ABN AMRO Clearing (AAC) Information Technology has a global focus with many programs on both a national and global level. The organization is self-supporting, running its own projects, applications and hosting them from its own data centers across the globe. Architecture and portfolio management are global domains.

Considering Information Technology as a main part of clearing services, the IT systems and processes have to meet ABN AMRO Clearing strategy demands whilst also adhering to internal and external regulations.

Objective of the Function:

AAC IT Global Technology Services (GTS) Platform Team control the Global Platforms in order to deliver compliant, reliable, flexible and cost efficient solutions and support and let the performance of the environments meet the demands and service levels of ABN AMRO Clearing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring availability and performance of the AAC Middleware/Application environments.
  • Maintenance, build, performance tuning of AAC Crown Jewel applications and MW solutions.
  • Works with the architecture team to provide AAC Certificate management / GoAnywhere / Kafka / WebMethods / Java / MQ / JBoss / Apache / Load Balancer / Middleware expertise to define and implement a global infrastructure to support existing and future projects.
  • Provides GoAnywhere / MQ / Jboss / WebMethods / Kafka expertise to the development team (internal and external) regarding development and deployment best practice and configuration for AAC applications.
  • Ownership of technical workloads including hosting Sprint meetings.
  • Works closely with support team colleagues to ensure that the associated hardware resources for the Middle Tiers are configured for optimum performance and availability.
  • Proactively monitors Middleware/Application Servers to ensure minimum downtime.
  • Provides regular trend analysis to track Middleware/Application Servers performance and throughput, for capacity planning purposes.
  • Responsible for enhancements, maintenance and upgrades to the Middle Tier environments.
  • Works with business, development and technical colleagues to manage and implement changes.
  • Carries out analysis of potential hardware problems prior to contacting third-party support. Escalates problems to third-party support when necessary – acting as a point of contact.
  • Analyses and resolves problems when they arise providing details of the resolution in the call logging system. Liaises with users to ensure fast and satisfactory problems resolution.
  • Develops automated housekeeping and alerting tasks to reduce the need for manual intervention. Investigates and develops methods for performance optimisation and the prevention of recurring problems.
  • Maintains system documentation.
  • Ensures all system and application changes are approved via the appropriate Change Control methods.
  • Develops and maintain runbooks for High Availability and Disaster Recovery tests and is responsible for planning and running these tests.
  • Handles the implementation of the bank's business applications running in development, test and production environments. This will include installation of applications, releases and patch management as well as upgrades.
  • Keeps up to date with existing and emerging middleware technologies and integrate with the development/architecture teams of their suitability for use within AAC.
  • Experience of implementing and supporting high availability solutions.

Required Knowledge & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of work experience.
  • Experience of implementing and supporting high availability solutions.
  • Understanding of and adherence to ITIL Change control procedures.
  • Experience in IBMi Operating System on IBM Power Servers, CL (Control Language), SQL Database (DB2), MQ on IBMI.
  • Strong knowledge of MQ, Kafka, WebMethods, File Transfer, Windows, Red Hat Linux, Networking, Active Directory.
  • Must have a strong understanding of the architectural and operational complexities of solutions deployed within a Middleware environment with hands on experience of many of the following technologies:
  • IBM MQ
  • Strong SFTP/FTP/SCP File Transfer software and Linux native processes
  • WebMethods Integration Server & Brokers
  • Kafka messaging
  • Ansible Scripting
  • Amazon Cloud
  • JMS
  • Monitoring/performance tuning JEE environment
  • SSL Certificate management including public key management
  • ServiceNow
  • Knowledge of Network topologies and Storage (SAN/NAS/DAS), clustering and virtualisation technologies.
  • Interaction with Oracle, PostgreSQL & MS SQL databases.
  • Management of disaster recovery testing for the Middleware Services block application and supporting Product Grid block application testing.

Required Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of Automation, Monitoring and Management.
  • Proven experience of working in an Agile framework eg.. Sprints / Kanban.
  • Strong interpersonal skills which are required to liaise with technical and business users across different regions.
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and to multiple deadlines, practical thinker.
  • Flexible attitude to working hours, including travel / working different time zones and weekend working when applicable.
  • Email, Telephone, reporting and management skills are required especially when liaising with third party support to achieve problem resolution.
  • Change management – adhering to ITIL procedures to ensure that any changes are carried out successfully.
  • Problem management – liaising with relevant parties to achieve a resolution.
  • Project management – experience of managing and working in projects.
