Several Post-doctoral Fellow/Research Associate positions in Air Transportation Modeling Research are available in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The research will be supervised by Prof Rhea LIEM. (Please contact Prof Liem via email: ) for questions about the scope of work). The multidisciplinary research team also includes faculty members from the Department of Physics (HKUST) and Department of Science and Environmental Studies (EdUHK).

The appointees will work with other team members (including PhD students) on route coordination and optimization for aircraft arrival, focusing on the terminal area at the Hong Kong International Airport. The research work will involve data analytics, computational modeling of complex systems, statistical modeling, sensitivity analysis, and optimization. Although the research will be fundamental in nature, the research team will work closely with relevant industry practitioners to ensure that the developed methods can help solve real-world problems, e.g. arrival delays, air space congestion, weather-aware decision making, in the long term. These forward-looking solutions will be critical once air transportation goes back to the pre-pandemic level and continues its upward growth trend.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in either Aerospace Engineering, Air Transportation, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science or relevant engineering disciplines with background research experience; strong Mathematics background and programming skills (mainly Python); preferably experience in air transportation research and/or complex system modeling; be fluent in both spoken and written English; and be open-minded, a fast learner, independent thinker, excellent team player and leader. (Duration: 1 year, renewable)
