We are seeking a Safety Assurance Specialist to join our team at Ricardo.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide safety engineering expertise for various signaling and infrastructure initiatives to ensure adherence to applicable standards.
  • Under the guidance of the Principal Consultant, oversee the system assurance framework to meet Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety (RAMS) goals.
  • Conduct risk assessments for designated discipline areas, demonstrating the ability to independently plan, facilitate, and document risk workshops.
  • Assist in business development efforts and proposal writing, identifying potential risks, creating method statements, defining clear acceptance criteria, and generating resource and cost estimates.
  • Manage and execute smaller projects, collaborating with clients to understand their objectives and desired outcomes, while taking direction from the Project Director as necessary.
  • Ensure clarity and management of the scope of work and time budgets, proactively anticipating and managing risks related to quality, timelines, and budget constraints.
  • For larger projects, assume responsibility for specific work packages and, as part of a team, deliver these to meet quality, time, and budget expectations.
  • Strive to meet overall client satisfaction targets throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Engage with clients, project stakeholders, and other industry participants.

Requirements

  • 5 to 10 years of practical experience as a Safety Assurance Specialist or in a similar related field within the rail industry.
  • A degree or equivalent technical qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Ideally, possess a background in railway signaling or a related field, with experience in auditing or assessment preferred.
  • Familiarity with tools and techniques such as FMECA and FTA-ETA is advantageous.
  • Strong subject matter knowledge and capabilities in specific areas, with significant practical design/application experience, enabling independent project work.
  • Experience in systems assurance engineering, with the ability to decompose system contexts from project documentation, interpret standards, and understand key elements/interfaces.
  • Capability to thrive in a consultancy environment, demonstrating flexibility and a focus on client satisfaction, including understanding client needs, developing requirements and solutions, managing expectations, and delivering high-quality outputs.
  • The candidate should have expertise in at least one of the following areas/subsystems/equipment:
  • Train Control and Protection Systems for traditional or high-speed rail lines, such as ETCS or CTCS, including Trackside components like RBC, TCC, LEU, Balise, and Trainborne elements like EVC, SDU, BTM, STM.
  • Train Control and Protection Systems for metro lines, such as CBTC, including Trackside components like ZC, DSU, LEU, Balise, and Trainborne elements like EVC, SDU, BTM.
  • Interlocking and Train/Vehicle Detection systems, including Computer-Based Interlocking, Track circuits, and Axle counters.
