Position Overview
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is inviting applications for the role of Research Assistant Professor specializing in Earth and Environmental Engineering or Climate and Water Resources. The selected candidates will engage with a diverse team of researchers focusing on critical issues such as tropical cyclone storm surge, moisture transport and recycling, hydrometeorological extremes, water resources management, carbon emissions targeting net-zero goals, and the planning of water and energy infrastructures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting innovative research in Earth and Environmental Engineering or Climate and Water Resources, with a focus on the specified areas or additional relevant topics;
- Providing mentorship to both postgraduate and undergraduate students;
- Developing and executing research initiatives, typically encouraged to commence in the second year or thereafter;
- Analyzing and interpreting complex data sets;
- Drafting research proposals and comprehensive reports;
- Publishing findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
- Collaborating with fellow researchers across various disciplines.
Appointees are encouraged to develop independent research projects that may stem from ongoing initiatives, including:
- Robust Infrastructure Planning for Sustainable Water Development in the Greater Bay Area under Demand Uncertainty and Climate Variability;
- INTACT: Intelligent tropical-storm-resilient systems for coastal cities using WRF modeling and Deep Learning/AI;
- Coastal Urban Flooding under Climate Change: Mechanisms of Evolution and Intelligent Analysis of Compound Extremes, including wind and precipitation analysis through Deep Learning or AI;
- Global moisture tracking and tracing methodologies;
- Monsoon dynamics and variability in the context of climate change;
- Research on compound extremes such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation, droughts, and wildfires;
- Precipitation predictability and forecasting utilizing deep learning and AI techniques.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in Earth and Environmental Engineering or a closely related field;
- Proficiency in one or more of the aforementioned research areas;
- Proven track record of conducting independent research and publishing in peer-reviewed journals;
- Strong quantitative skills with experience in data analysis and modeling;
- Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities;
- Capability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams;
- Experience in mentoring students is considered advantageous.
We offer a competitive salary that reflects qualifications and experience. The appointment will be on a fixed-term contract for two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance, funding availability, and mutual agreement.
