Position Overview
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is looking for three dedicated and skilled individuals to fill the role of Research Assistant Professor in the fields of Earth and Environmental Engineering or Climate and Water Resources. The selected candidates will collaborate with a diverse team of researchers focused on critical issues such as tropical cyclone storm surge, moisture transport and recycling, hydrometeorological extremes, water resources management, carbon neutrality initiatives, and infrastructure planning for water and energy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engaging in research activities within Earth and Environmental Engineering or Climate and Water Resources, concentrating on the specified areas or exploring new avenues;
- Providing mentorship to both postgraduate and undergraduate students;
- Designing and executing research initiatives, typically encouraged to commence in the second year or thereafter;
- Conducting data analysis and interpretation;
- Preparing research proposals and comprehensive reports;
- Publishing research outcomes in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
- Collaborating with fellow researchers in the domain.
Appointees are encouraged to cultivate independent research projects that may arise from the ongoing initiatives outlined below:
- Resilient Infrastructure Planning for Sustainable Water Development in the Greater Bay Area amidst Demand Uncertainty and Climate Variability;
- INTACT: Intelligent Systems for Coastal Cities Resilient to Tropical Storms using WRF Modelling and Deep Learning/AI;
- Urban Flooding Analysis under Climate Change: Mechanisms of Evolution and Intelligent Analysis of Compound Extremes related to Winds and Precipitation through Deep Learning or AI;
- Global Moisture Tracking and Tracing;
- Monsoon Dynamics and Variability in the Context of Climate Change;
- Research on Compound Extremes such as Heatwaves, Heavy Precipitation, Droughts, and Wildfires;
- Enhancing Precipitation Predictability and Forecasting using Deep Learning and AI.
Qualifications:
- A PhD in Earth and Environmental Engineering or a closely related field;
- Proficiency in one or more of the aforementioned research domains;
- Proven capability to conduct independent research and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals;
- Strong quantitative abilities along with experience in data analysis and modeling;
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills;
- Ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams;
- Experience in student mentorship is advantageous.

Compensation and Benefits:
The salary offered is competitive and will be aligned with qualifications and experience. The appointment will be on a fixed-term contract for two years, with potential renewal based on performance, funding availability, and mutual agreement. A gratuity will be awarded upon successful contract completion. Additional benefits include annual leave, medical and dental coverage, and a housing allowance where applicable.
