Associate Principal Engineer / Senior Lead Engineer / Lead Engineer, AI System Development role at ASTRI - Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) was founded by the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in 2000 with the mission of enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness through applied research. ASTRI’s core R&D competence in various areas is grouped under five Technology Divisions: Advanced Electronic Components and Systems; Artificial Intelligence and Trust Technologies; Communications Technologies; IoT Sensing and AI Technologies; and Intelligent Perception and Control Technologies. ASTRI’s research spans six core areas: Smart City, Financial Technologies, New Industrialisation and Intelligent Manufacturing, Digital Health, Application Specific Integrated Circuits and Metaverse. As of 2023/24, ASTRI has transferred more than 1,500 technologies to the industry and has been granted over 1,100 patents in the Mainland, the US, and other countries. Job Responsibilities Design, develop, and deploy AI systems with a core focus on structural reasoning, ensuring the AI systems meet standards for efficiency, accuracy, scalability, and alignment with software engineering best practices. Establish and implement systematic testing frameworks across the entire AI system development lifecycle to validate output reliability, guarantee system quality, and maintain cross‑environment compatibility. Proactively track and assess advancements in AI models and software engineering practices; integrate high‑impact innovations to optimize the AI system’s operational efficiency, reasoning accuracy, and long‑term market competitiveness. Job Requirements Master’s or PhD degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. Exceptional candidates with a Bachelor’s degree plus 8+ years of relevant professional experience will also be considered. Software Engineering Expertise Deep proficiency in full‑lifecycle software engineering, with proven experience in requirement analysis, architectural design, coding, testing, deployment, and post‑launch maintenance. 5+ years of hands‑on software development experience, including 2+ years leading complex cross‑functional projects. Proficiency in multiple programming languages and mastery of diverse development & testing frameworks. AI Technical Capabilities Advanced understanding of AI tools and techniques, with a demonstrated passion for AI system development. Practical experience in AI coding, prompt engineering, fine‑tuning workflows, and structural reasoning methodologies. Prior experience building or contributing to AI‑driven tools is highly preferred. Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. Self‑driven, with the ability to work independently and collaborate effectively in cross‑functional team environments. Lives ASTRI values.
