The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes. The museum comprises 7 800 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations. The Assistant Curator (Research) will work primarily on projects associated with the Hong Kong Palace Museum – Hong Kong Polytechnic University Joint Chinese Textile Centre (“Centre”) as well as the Chris Hall Collection (“Collection”) at the Hong Kong Palace Museum. Reporting to the Hong Kong Palace Museum’s Deputy Director, Curatorial, Collection and Programming, the Assistant Curator (Research) will enjoy opportunities to work on diverse aspects of museum and scholarly work, including collection research, exhibition planning and implementation, scholarly events, publication, collection care and conservation, as well as other projects associated with the Centre and the Collection. Drawing on the unparalleled strength of the nearly 3,000 items from the Chris Hall Collection at the HKPM, one of the world’s most important Chinese historical textile collections, the Centre is committed to advancing global understanding and innovative application of Chinese historical textiles from different perspectives, ranging from art, history to science and technology, through research, teaching, training, public education, and publication projects. (This is a fixed‑term contract position of 2 years with the possibility for renewal subject to organisational needs and individual performance.) You Will Be Responsible For supporting the planning and implementation of the Centre’s activities, including but not limited to conferences, workshops, lectures, and study visits by PolyU faculty and students and other visiting scholars, as well as publications; conducting research to support the above activities for the Centre; serving as the primary point of contact for content related matters for the Centre between the Hong Kong Palace Museum and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, including organising regular meetings and taking meeting notes, and following up on action items; managing project calendars and keeping track of the progress of the projects; preparing regular reports of the Centre’s overall work and specific projects; delivering talks and conducting training sessions to HKPM, PolyU teams as well as docents and the general public; facilitating the communication between the Centre and the sponsors, donors and other stakeholders; coordinating with the Museum’s Curatorial Affairs, Conservation and Collection, Publishing and Editorial, Learning and Engagement teams and other teams; helping to build a network of professors, curators, donors, sponsors; and performing any duties from time to time as reasonably as assigned by HKPM. You Should possess a MA degree, in Chinese art history or archaeology; conservation/ conservation science, material culture; Chinese history; or other relevant disciplines is required. A doctoral degree is preferred. preferably with demonstrable research or practical work experience on Chinese historical textiles; preferably, have 1 years, or more, of work experience of project /event management or coordination, preferably for activities such as teaching, conferences, lectures, editorial and publishing, study trips in museums, universities or other cultural or educational institutions; possess excellent writing skills and proficiency in both written and spoken English and Chinese; possess proficiency in office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat; possess good problem‑solving skills and communication skills; pay attention to details and be self‑motivated and organised; and be available and willing to work irregular hours, including weekends and public holidays, for events if necessary.
