Skills:Position Overview
The Associate Research Scientist will conduct research and development activities related to the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches in the detection of aquaculture pathogens. The incumbent will be a key member of a small team researching and developing technologies that allow aquaculture farmers to rapidly detect and respond to the likelihood of disease outbreaks. They will perform molecular genetic approaches based on PCR, qPCR, LAMP and other pathogen detection technologies, collecting required samples and undertaking laboratory analyses. The position will involve both laboratory and some fieldwork, along with industry liaison and engagement. It also will involve research and design of new molecular assays to detect pathogens, researching and development of a pathogen biobank, report writing, and other activities as required. Research activities will be conducted under the supervision of the Chief Scientist.
Principal Accountabilities
- Conduct research to design and implement in a commercial context molecular assays to detect various aquatic pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, and protozoans;
- Work on and/or manage projects related to obtaining field data from aquaculture farms and other locations and ensuring samples are processed, archived, and analysed in appropriate ways;
- Collect and ensure proper collection process of water eDNA samples, their timely processing, and delivery of results;
- Work with the broader team to integrate eDNA detection technology with AI prediction of disease risk;
- Communicate results to industry and academic stakeholders, including presenting at conferences, workshops, and industry forums.
Selection Criteria
- PhD in Genetics with a focus on molecular assay development and technologies, eDNA, and/or aquatic diseases;
- Experience working with a wide range of genetic technologies, including PCR, qPCR, next generation sequencing;
- Experience in analysing data from genetic analyses and presenting it in a simple and clear format;
- Demonstrated experience working in research projects involving industry;
- Evidence of working in successful and productive multidisciplinary teams;
- Demonstrated oral, well-written, and interpersonal communication skills;
- Esteemed record relevant to opportunity in scientific publication of research;
- Possess personality/characteristics and share values of curiosity, open mindset, can-do and continuous learning attitude, accountability and willingness to take new initiatives, teamwork spirit, integrity, and passion to make a positive impact;
- Comfortable and capacity to work with an initial small team in an entrepreneurial and dynamic setting.
