FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES ACADEMY OF CHINESE, HISTORY, RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY Research Assistant ) The Academy is currently seeking a full-time Research Assistant to support a Research Grants Council (RGC) Early Career Scheme (ECS)-funded research project on the political history of the Philippines during the Cold War, based in the Department of History. The position will primarily focus on processing, collating, and cataloging extensive collections of digitised historical documents in multiple Philippine languages. Responsibilities Process, collate, and catalog extensive collections of digitised historical documents in various formats; Implement and manage Optical Character Recognition (OCR) workflows for documents in English, Tagalog, Ilocano, and Ibanag to create machine‑readable text; Assist in preparing and running documents through specialised software and Large Language Model (LLM) systems for data interrogation and analysis; Assist with data management, including the organisation of digital files and the creation of a structured, searchable data repository; Provide translation and transcription support for project materials across the required languages; Conduct supplementary library and digital research as needed; and Perform other project‑related duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator (PI). Requirements A bachelor’s or higher degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Digital Humanities, Linguistics, or a closely related field; Essential Technical Skills: Proven experience or strong familiarity with: Data management and digital archiving principles; Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software and workflows (Tesseract); Programming for text processing (e.g., Python, R) is a significant advantage; An interest in or experience with computational text analysis and Large Language Models (LLMs); Essential Language Proficiency: Fluency in English (written and spoken); Professional fluency in Tagalog; Reading knowledge of Ilocano and Ibanag is essential. The ability to translate between these languages and English is vital; Strong analytical, organisational, and problem‑solving skills; and Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and able to work independently.
