Reports to the Senior Director Design and R&D, the R&D – Design Development Engineer plays a pivotal role in transforming early‑stage roadmap ideas into tangible proof‑of‑concept samples. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and prototyping new products and components that demonstrate OSM’s advanced materials, technologies, and capabilities. The engineer will leverage a broad knowledge of materials science, process technologies, and manufacturing methods to pioneer innovative solutions that represent the "yet‑to‑be‑seen." This role bridges creative concepting and technical realisation, supporting internal R&D efforts and acting as a catalyst for innovation across the product development pipeline. Job Description Lead development of roadmap projects from conceptual design to functional proof‑of‑concept prototypes Collaborate with industrial design, product development, and manufacturing teams to translate creative ideas into testable samples Evaluate and select appropriate materials, processes, and construction methods for early builds Integrate new technologies, processes, and materials into functional samples to demonstrate capability and innovation Create and test prototypes that showcase product feasibility, function, and performance Document design intent, technical justifications, and process selections throughout development stages Provide hands‑on technical input to ensure early‑stage builds align with the long‑term manufacturing proposition Build a reference library of emerging technologies, processes, and materials for internal knowledge sharing Support technology roadmap planning and contribute to material/process innovation strategies Facilitate technical reviews and lead discussions around DFM, proof‑of‑concept results, and next‑step validation Other Functions and Responsibilities Serve as an internal technical ambassador for new processes and materials Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to uplift technical literacy and creative problem‑solving Share learnings and development insights with stakeholders to inspire future product opportunities Job Requirement Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Product Design, or a related field 3–7 years in R&D, product innovation, or design development roles—preferably in consumer goods, wearable tech, soft goods, or hybrid electronics Strong hands‑on prototyping, experimentation, and problem‑solving capabilities Wide‑ranging knowledge of materials (plastics, textiles, foams, elastomers, composites) and fabrication techniques Familiarity with advanced and emerging manufacturing processes (e.g. additive manufacturing, lamination, over‑moulding, welding, smart materials, etc.) Excellent 3D CAD skills (e.g. SolidWorks, NX, Rhino) and ability to translate ideas into buildable designs Comfortable working in fast‑paced, iterative R&D environments Strong communication and documentation skills Creative mindset, driven by curiosity, technical experimentation, and future‑thinking Experience working with or developing hybrid soft goods or electronics‑integrated products Previous exposure to innovation road‑mapping and technology scouting Familiarity with proof‑of‑concept validation tools and lab testing methodologies Accept frequent business travel to China (around 2–3 days per week) #J-18808-Ljbffr
