Senior/Staff Software Engineer – Backend Engineering ExpressVPN – Join to apply for the Senior/Staff Software Engineer – Backend Engineering role. Responsibilities Feature Development: Work on our internal ServerAdmin tool building new features to support the Operations Team. ServerAdmin is built on Ruby on Rails; new services will be built in Rust where appropriate. Build clean and high quality code: Ensure that the code is well written and structured to allow the team to iterate quickly. Code‑reviews: Invest in spreading knowledge around the team, keeping our code easy to read, test, and maintain. Continuous Delivery: Use TDD; logic is tested automatically and we deliver continuously. DevOps: “You build it, you run it” mentality; we maintain the backend systems we build. About The VPN Control Plane Team Build and maintain a three‑tier web application backend that operations uses to maintain an accurate inventory of resources spanning data centers, networks, and servers. Provide necessary data and decisions to allow client‑side apps to stay connected quickly and reliably. Design, build, and operate systems that enable our operations teams to deliver maximum service quality to end‑users, with extensive monitoring and benchmarking. Internal Customers Engineering teams building native client‑side apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, routers, and browser extensions. Operations teams. Key Challenges & Approach Strict requirements to protect the privacy and security of end-users. Long‑standing practice of test‑driven development and code‑reviews; emphasis on code quality and test coverage. Desired Skills and Experience At least 6 years of experience in Backend Software Engineering. Strong developer in server‑side applications; stack proficiency is secondary. Ability to automate tests for almost any requirement. Proven track record of creating elegant architectural solutions to complex problems. Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go, Rust, or other backend frameworks/languages. Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal. Nice to Haves Experience with Terraform or OpenTofu for infrastructure as code. Experience with AWS. Experience with GitHub Actions. Application Guidelines We do not sponsor visas in the EU.
