Digital Publishing Journalist, Hong Kong

Hong Kong

About us

The Financial Times is one of the world's leading news organisations, globally recognised for its authority, integrity and accuracy, with a mission to deliver quality information and services worldwide.

At the FT, curiosity thrives and ambitious thinking is rewarded. Here, you're given the chance to reach millions, create work that matters and deliver impartial journalism in a polarised world.

In our warm, collaborative culture, you'll connect with a diverse community of experts who support your growth, career aspirations and wellbeing.

Your future at the FT will be filled with opportunities that challenge and inspire you. With no fixed path, you'll discover new skills and forge a career that can take you anywhere.

Build a newsworthy career at the FT.

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion

We believe in the power of unique perspectives and want all voices in our organisation to be heard, respected and valued. A supportive workplace is one where employees feel they can be themselves and operate to their full potential. We are committed to removing barriers for everyone, with a focus on addressing those faced by underrepresented groups.

The Role

The Financial Times is looking for a digital publishing editor to join our Asia team based in Hong Kong. The role will require you to work across our award-winning coverage of financial, economic, corporate, political and social news from the world's fastest-growing continent, performing a final edit on our output to maintain the highest standards of accuracy, style, sense and fluency.

As a digital-first organisation, the Financial Times puts heavy emphasis on the presentation of our stories online, and you will make sure that we always put our best foot forward. You will also be responsible for editing newsletters, breaking news notifications and social media posts; will refine photos, headlines, standfirsts and captions; and will tailor digital presentation to maximise each story's impact on readers. You will also revise and fact check articles to catch any errors that may make it through the editing process.

Working with a team of experienced reporters and news editors, the role provides many opportunities to learn and advance in a world-class journalistic environment. While it is not part of the formal responsibilities, there may be opportunities to report and write articles, and to get more deeply involved in shaping the FT's coverage.

Your Skills

You will need native-level written English and a strong sense for news writing in order to spot weaknesses in copy and make it better. You will be a stickler for accuracy and clarity, and along with a diligent, thorough approach to work, you will have a flair for writing engaging digital headlines. You must be confident and assertive in this "gatekeeper" role, raising queries with writers and news editors when appropriate. We always want the articles we publish to be great, not just good enough.

The ability to work independently and under time pressure is important. The revise edit is the final stage of publishing our journalism for readers online, and the digital publishing journalist must balance competing demands for attention from various desks and departments without sacrificing forensic attention to detail. Fast but accurate work is vital so this function does not become a bottleneck.

Prior knowledge of the Asia region and its stories is extremely helpful but not essential, as is previous experience in editing, reporting or digital production roles. While giving value to experience, we will consider relatively junior applicants if they have the right attitude and excellent English-language skills.

Please submit your application by the end of the day, Wednesday 8th January 2025.

What's in it for you? Our benefits

Our benefits vary by location but we are committed to providing best-in-class perks across all our offices. These include generous annual leave, medical cover, inclusive parental leave packages, subsidised gym memberships and opportunities to give back to the community. Full details of our benefits are available here.

We've embraced a hybrid working model that promotes flexibility, including remote work options. We will support specific flexibility requests for all roles where feasible.

Accessibility

We are a disability confident employer and Valuable 500 signatory.

Please let us know if you require any reasonable adjustments/personalisation as part of the application process or to enable you to attend an interview. If you would like to discuss your requirements or have any questions, email and a member of our team will be happy to help.
