About the Team You will be a member of a small team with a startup vibe. You will play a part in producing forward‑looking, insightful and timely China‑related content—largely based on existing materials and reports of the SCMP newsroom—for our most‑valued subscribers. Purpose of the Position We are recruiting two specialist researchers, one who will focus on China’s development in artificial intelligence, the other to track the country’s advances in biotechnology. Specialist knowledge in either AI or biotechnology is required. You will work under the direction of editors to compile factual information that will be accessed by our premium readers. The information will often be gleaned from the South China Morning Post’s own archives and through communication with newsroom colleagues, but will also include facts and data from third parties. The information you collect will be the basis for value‑added articles and visualizations. In this role, you will Research the AI or biotech sector, depending on the role, and occasionally other China‑related topics such as laws, regulations, economic and financial data, and news across diverse areas including education, science and defence. Help organize information and build information‑collection tools that increase the team’s productivity. Communicate with newsroom colleagues to gather factual information and contacts that provide context on the news of the day. Communicate with experts, analysts, leaders and other opinion‑makers to schedule interviews or obtain information. Work from the Hong Kong office. Skills and Experience that will lead to success Candidates with newsroom experience and/or analyst experience from a bank, fund, think tank or research house are preferred. Sound knowledge of mainland China’s history and its economic, political and social developments. Familiarity with key Chinese government regulatory agencies overseeing policies that govern the economy and markets, as well as key markets and macro‑economic data. Familiarity with developments in China’s artificial intelligence or biotech sectors, or both. Ability to read financial statements, stock exchange filings, shareholder notes, stock prices, analysts’ reports and rating statements. Ability to evaluate and spot trends in complex data sets and explain them in a simple, easy‑to‑digest way. At least a bachelor’s degree; a major related to journalism or communications is a plus. At least two years of experience as a reporter or at least four years of work experience in a job that requires research skills to collect data and other information. Native proficiency in written Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) and fluency in Mandarin Chinese. Attention to detail, particularly regarding preserving information intact when translating or summarizing. Strong organizational skills. Proficiency in common office software; advanced spreadsheet skills or practical coding skills are an advantage. #J-18808-Ljbffr
