The School of Science of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) invites applications for the position of Head of Division of Life Science.

The School and the Department
The School of Science is the home to five world-class division/departments, including Chemistry, Life Science, Mathematics, Ocean Science and Physics. Current enrollment at the school includes over 2,000 undergraduate students and around 1,000 postgraduate students. The Division of Life Science is comprised of 35 faculty members with research interests and expertise covering areas of Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, Macromolecular Structure and Function, Cellular Regulation and Signaling, Biotechnology and Medicinal Biochemistry, Cancer Biology and Developmental Biology. The top-notch research work of our faculty is supported by well-established research infrastructures including an advanced Biosciences Central Research Facility, an AI Supercomputing Facility, a recently expanded state-of-the-art Laboratory Animal Facility and the first Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) set up in Hong Kong. The Division’s undergraduate programs offer a flexible curriculum which provide students with ample opportunities to receive comprehensive biology training across a number of interesting topics such as Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Biotechnology, and Biotechnology and Business (a joint program with the Business School) as well as a dedicated international research enrichment track which allows students to have a taste on scientific research during their undergraduate studies. The postgraduate programs place additional emphasis on training in original research and are focused on fundamental, interdisciplinary, and applied research topics.
The Role
Reporting to the Dean of Science, the Head of the Division is expected to provide leadership for the Division, oversee faculty recruitment activities, guide and monitor resource allocation, and be responsible for the Division’s academic advancement in both teaching and research. The appointee is also expected to devise strategies to promote and facilitate collaborative, interdisciplinary research with individuals in other Departments within the School of Science as well as in the Schools of Engineering, Business and Humanities and Social Science.
The Candidate
The prospective headship candidate should have an outstanding record of research accomplishments that align with the requirements of a Full Professor with substantiation. In addition to demonstrated research excellence, the appointee should be a visionary leader with a strong commitment to elevate the Division’s research and educational endeavors to new heights with a well-thought-out plan. The ideal candidate should also have a broad understanding of research and educational opportunities in life science and possess exceptional leadership and managerial capabilities.
Terms & Applications
The appointment will be concurrent with a substantive professorial appointment. The headship will be a full-time appointment for an initial term of three years, and renewable for another term, subject to further review.
