The Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is based at the Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH), a 1,637 bed tertiary referral teaching hospital managed by the Hospital Authority (HA) and affiliated with The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). It is a major trauma centre providing a range of acute specialist services.

Each year we provide anaesthetic services for 14,000 operations at the main operating theatre, with one third being emergency cases. An additional 2000 anaesthetics are administered in the labour ward and other areas outside the operating theatre suite. In addition to 24-hour acute pain services, we also provide anaesthesia and perioperative transesophageal echocardiography for 420 adult cardiac surgical cases including major valve and aortic surgeries. About 100 adult cardiology interventional procedures are offered at the cardiac intervention centre annually. We are part of the multidisciplinary HEART team managing patients with complex cardiac conditions.

Post A – General Anaesthesia
Applicants should have (i) a medical qualification (approved for registration with the Hong Kong Medical Council); (ii) a professional qualification in anaesthesiology (e.g. FRCA, FANZCA, FHKCA or equivalent); (iii) completed specialist training in respective country; and (iv) preferably some teaching experience. A good command of spoken and written English is required (proficiency in Cantonese will be an advantage but not essential).

Duties include (a) providing high quality clinical services in anaesthesia; (b) teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses; and (c) other duties as assigned by the Department Chairman.

Post B – Cardiac Anaesthesia
Applicants should have (i) a medical qualification (approved for registration with the Hong Kong Medical Council); (ii) a professional qualification in anaesthesiology (e.g. FRCA, FANZCA, FHKCA or equivalent); (iii) completed specialist training in respective country; (iv) qualification in Examination of Special Competence in Advanced Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography, or equivalent qualification; (v) independently provided anaesthesia for not less than 50 adult cases in past year; and (vi) preferably some teaching experience. A good command of spoken and written English is required (proficiency in Cantonese will be an advantage but not essential).

Duties include (a) providing high quality clinical services in cardiac anaesthesia and cardiology interventional procedures; (b) providing perioperative transesophageal echocardiography; (c) teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses; and (d) other duties as assigned by the Department Chairman.
