Research Assistant Professor (RAP) and Post-doctoral Fellow (PDF) positions are available in the Signal Processing and Computational Biology group (SPCB) of the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. Each RAP/PDF will contribute to one of the two projects, involving the development of machine learning and/or deep learning models. Project 1 will address challenges related to COVID-19 evolution, immunology and vaccine design using genetic sequence data, while Project 2 involves developing automated systems for detecting eye diseases from image data. The SPCB group is involved in multiple Hong Kong government-funded projects (e.g., see ) and works with diverse collaborators, including collaborators at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Eye Center, the School of Public Health of the University of Hong Kong, the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, Australia, and the Kirby Institute of the University of New South Wales.

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research, candidates should have strong experience in one or more of the disciplines of machine/deep learning, signal/image processing, mathematics and bioinformatics/computational biology. For the COVID-19 related project, knowledge of immunology will be a plus. The selected candidate(s) will be expected to work independently and be highly motivated to conduct impactful research in machine/deep learning applications. Candidates with previous PDF experience and excellent research profile will be considered as RAP.

Applicants should have a PhD degree in electrical/electronic/computer engineering or related disciplines including mathematics/statistics, computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science and physics/biophysics. Ideal candidates should have an outstanding academic record and a strong mathematical background; exceptional communication skills in written and spoken English; programming experience with MATLAB, Python and/or R; and research publications in reputable peer-reviewed conferences or journals. Experience in developing web-based software platforms will be a plus.
