General Summary:

The Newsdesk Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) Researcher is a data journalist position based in Hong Kong who will work closely with senior editors and reporters to uncover fresh news stories, break news stories and track high-profile editorial threads on ongoing high-profile stories. S/he is constantly searching for new stories that could require extensive research and investigation.

S/he will also be responsible for discovering and verifying user generated (UGC) content on social media platforms during breaking news events, as well as ongoing newsgathering efforts. This will involve geolocating and clearing both videos and images. He/she should have basic OSINT skills with a willingness to expand on those.

S/he has strong organizational skills and is meticulous in keeping track of several things at once with an eye for news, so that managers can be quickly alerted. S/he works collaboratively with a team as s/he will be required to help support desk editors, show producers and field staff as required - from sourcing/logging/transcribing content. Additionally, there may be assignments to News Desk Producer responsibilities where appropriate, as well as rotations on overnight shift.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Proactively digs for leads that will keep our platforms competitive - both in terms of breaking new stories and breaking new lines during ongoing stories

  • Digs for fresh news stories and flags important stories/developments on high-profile stories

  • Organized, meticulous, tenacious and able to forensically dig through extensive documents to find investigative threads

  • Discovering, newsgathering and verifying user generated content (UGC) on social media.

  • Geolocating and clearing videos and images on social media during breaking news and for ongoing newsgathering needs.

  • Debunking inaccurate viceos or information spreading on social platforms.

  • Able to multi-task and work on both short-term and long-term projects with reporters and desk/digital editors

  • Monitors and researches developing news stories or topics, images, as directed by Seniors or to support reporters, desk/digital editors and field

  • Ingests, logs and transcribes images directed, responsible for metadata and liaises with library and picture sources to obtain, clear and enter video to enhance our storytelling across all platforms.  

Experience required:

  • Proven research experience, organized, pays attention to detail, able to multi-task on projects

  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment and under pressure

  • Collaborative, with excellent communication skills

  • Experience with newsgathering and clearing content on social media

  • Experience with basic OSINT skills; geolocation, satellite imagery, metadata analysis and reverse image search as well as having a willingingness to learn and expand on these skills.

  • Experience with a variety of social media platforms including  Telegram, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram

  • Technically adept

  • Experienced user of digital and social media platforms

  • Self-starter, innovative and creative, knowledge of international affairs

  • Previous role(s) in a media environment

  • Undergraduate degree in journalism or related studies

  • Language skills (Bilingual) - Excellent command of the English language; other Asian or foreign languages are very beneficial

  • Willing to travel internationally for breaking news.
